Change is good……

STRESS!!!  This i2014-05-14-10-12-242s my first blog posting ever and it is a little intimidating!!!  Go figure, I can talk to anyone about darn near anything and yet public speaking and writing both freak me out.

As many of you know, Coldwell Banker North Shore is a family real estate business that John and Lucie Detrick started in back in 1971, when they lived in Duluth.  Dad LOVED the north shore and we spent all of our family vacations mid-trail fishing.  Great memories!  Dad eventually talked mom into moving up here in 1976 and the bought Ted & Mary Liebsch’s house, which is now Dr. Lindquist’s office.  Jack Sarchett, Dale Johnson, Barb Borman and Chuck Beberg are just a few of the faces that worked at Detrick Realty.  Eventually John went into partnership with Marland Hansen and that was the beginning of Detrick-Hansen Ltd.

During the 1980’s, dad moved the office to County Road 7 so he could drive his tractor down the hill from his house to the office.  Dean worked for him at that time and it would be pretty entertaining hearing Dean tell stories of working for John.  Keep in mind that the real estate market was incredibly soft and it was tough to earn a living.  Eventually Dean moved to Eau Claire, married Amy and they had two beautiful sons.

For years I said I was NEVER moving to GM and I was NEVER selling real estate.  When we found out dad was terminally ill with brain cancer back in 1991, he asked me to move home and take over the business since I was single and had graduated from SCSU with a degree in Real Estate.  Would never have chosen this path and yet I can’t imagine living my life any other place.  Truly makes you believe in destiny.

Through the years, we went through a lot of changes.  Mom got her real estate license and loved selling homes. Dean rejoined us back in the late 1990’s. We bought the CB franchise and gave up the family name.    The MLS and internet totally changed the dynamics of real estate and were contributing causes to the escalation of our market and the eventual crash.

The good news with surviving the down times is that it makes you work harder and pursue increasing the value that you offer to your customers because they deserve it.  So now we are adding the blogs, facebook, twitter – the social media is the next phase in our business.   We get excited when we see what we can do online marketing!  We are lucky because Joey is the 3rd generation of Detrick’s to work this business and he is far more “computer literate” then I will ever be!

This photo was taken about month or so before we knew dad was sick.  I don’t think John, Lucie or Dean ever dreamed that Joey would some day be working at the business that they all worked so hard to build.  Imagine the pride that they would feel seeing Joey now working at Lucie’s desk (which was originally John’s!)?  Truly gives meaning to the circle of life.

Change is good…….
